What is the Catholic teaching on cremation?

Cremation is a broad topic. I will offer a “short answer” and provide you with references for more in-depth study.

While the Catholic Church has always expressed a preference for Christian burial, cremation can be an acceptable option. Here is what the Code of Canon Law, canon 1176 has to say on this point: “§3. The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the deceased be observed; nevertheless, the Church does not prohibit cremation unless it was chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine.”
