Today, after ten days in Israel, we boarded planes and headed back home. After such a transformative experience, it’s strange to think that we’re headed back to our daily lives.
Today, we traveled to the site of the Transfiguration, where Jesus appeared in his glorified body to Peter, James, and John. The disciples saw Moses and Abraham conversing with the Lord, and and witnessed Christ’s face shining like the sun.
Today, we climbed in a boat and explored the Sea of Galilee. From the shore, we could see the place where Christ invited the disciples to join him in his mission here on earth.
Today, we visit the Church of the Annunciation. The towering dome of the Church houses the cave where tradition holds to be the home of the Blessed Mother. It is in this place that we believe that Mary said yes to the will of God.
Today, we walked the Way of the Cross throughout the streets of Jerusalem. Many of us grew up praying the Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent, but it was incredible to pray the prayers while walking the path Christ walked during Holy Week.
Today, we visited the garden of Gethsemane, near the foot of the Mount of Olives. Christ went here with his disciples to pray the night before he was crucified.
Today, some of our pilgrims visited the pool of Bethesda. In the time of Christ, a large number of ill, blind, lame, and crippled gathered at the pool daily, hoping for healing.
The Jordan River is the site where Jesus’ public ministry officially began with his baptism by John the Baptist. From above, the Father’s voice is heard: “This is my beloved son, in whom my favor rests.” The Father’s voice proclaims his delight in Christ.
When we entered the Church of the Nativity, the oldest complete church in the Christian world, we had to stoop low. The entrance to the fortress-like church measures just shy of four feet tall. While it may seem strange at first glance, this small door is a beautiful reminder.
On our very first day in Israel, we began our pilgrimage by exploring the route to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This is the site of the most important event in human history: the Resurrection of Christ.
Today, our pilgrims gathered from all across the United States to start their journey to Israel. We have a long plane ride ahead of us, but excitement about the encounter we’ll have in the Holy Land is helping us tackle jet lag.
