Prayer and Spirituality - Resources

Resources for Daily Meditation

The following are recommended resources to use for developing the habit of daily meditation. You can search for these books online and view portions of the book so you can get a sense of how each one is laid out before deciding which one(s) to purchase.

Books:

The Way of the Cross by St. Josemaría Escrivá

Suggested use:

  • Read and reflect on one Station a day.

  • Reflect on the Station itself for 2 – 3 minutes.

  • Then spend 5 minutes on each of the “Points for meditation” for that particular Station.

In Conversation with God by Francis Fernandez (or Relevant Radio app to access this)

Suggested use:

  • The goal is not to get to the end of the day’s reading; if you read 2 sentences and sit for 45 minutes, that would be a great day of meditation.

  • Consider using the suggested resolutions.

  • This follows the liturgical year, so it helps you prepare for Mass, including the saints feast days according to the Novus Ordo liturgical calendar.

  • This can easily be accessed on phone on the Relevant Radio app.

The Better Part: A Christ-Centered Resource for Personal Prayer by Fr. John Bartunek

Suggested use:

  • No matter how slowly you progress through the book, start each day with a reading of the Gospel. It can be the same Gospel reading as the day before.

  • This is a spiritual commentary on all 4 Gospels directed at your will, intellect, and heart

  • It’s simple and practical

  • It’s flexible in that you can progress from start to finish OR use the liturgical index or thematic index as a guide for the order in which you read the units

  • It’s sprinkled with quotes from various saints, and these may be a source of meditation and reflection, too.

Divine Intimacy by Fr. Gabriel of St Mary Magdalen

Suggested use:

  • This is an easy read, very beautiful and prayerful

  • Meditations follow the Latin Mass calendar for the liturgical year.

  • The paragraphs are longer so stop 2-3 times/paragraph.

  • There are 2 meditations and a reflection (called a colloquy) for each day. You can use one or both.

Apps:*

  • “Daily Rosary Meditations: Pray, Learn & Share Your Faith” – Dr. Mike Scherschligt and Dr. Troy Hinkel’s Rosary meditations!

  • “Hallow: Catholic Meditation: Daily Prayer, Rosary, & Bible” - Daily reflections with Jonathan Roumie & Jeff Cavins

  • “Relevant Radio” – access In Conversation with God as referenced in the book section.

*On your phone, type what is in the quotes in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, and the correct app should pop up.

Online meditations:

These are very short meditations so be sure to spend time reflecting. Remember the goal is to meditate at least 30 minutes.
